The Power of Pole Fitness: A Nurse Practitioner’s Perspective

As a board-certified nurse practitioner, my passion lies in helping people achieve optimal health through sustainable lifestyle habits. While much of my work revolves around guiding busy moms over 40 toward weight loss and chronic disease prevention, I also believe in finding enjoyable and effective workouts that keep the body strong and energized. One of my personal favorites? Pole fitness.

My Journey with Pole Fitness
I first discovered pole fitness in 2009 when I moved to Florida, looking for a fun way to build muscle and stay active. Traditional workouts didn’t excite me, but pole fitness immediately captured my interest. It was challenging, engaging, and full of variety, exactly what I needed to stay motivated.
Although my journey hasn’t been consistent, my love for pole has never wavered. I trained regularly for up to six months during my first pregnancy before pausing, then picked it up again only to stop during my second pregnancy. Life’s responsibilities often pulled me away, but something about pole fitness always called me back. Now, I’m committed to incorporating it into my routine again because I know firsthand how powerful it is, not just for fitness but for overall well-being.

The Health Benefits of Pole Fitness
Pole fitness requires lifting and controlling your own body weight, making it an excellent form of resistance training. Over time, it helps build lean muscle mass, which boosts metabolism and aids in fat loss. Every move in pole fitness engages the core, strengthening the abdominal muscles, lower back, and obliques. A strong core is essential for overall stability and injury prevention.
While it may not seem like traditional cardio, pole fitness gets the heart pumping, burns calories, and improves endurance. The combination of strength and movement leads to effective fat loss and improved cardiovascular health. Weight-bearing exercises like pole fitness help maintain and even improve bone density, reducing the risk of osteoporosis. It also enhances joint mobility and flexibility, which is crucial for long-term movement and injury prevention.
Beyond the physical benefits, pole fitness is empowering. It builds confidence, reduces stress, and offers a fun way to express oneself. The sense of accomplishment when mastering a new move is unmatched.

Why I Recommend Pole Fitness
As a nurse practitioner, I always emphasize sustainable fitness routines that people enjoy because if you love your workout, you’ll stick with it. Pole fitness is not only effective for strength and fat loss, but it’s also a fun and creative way to stay active. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced poler, the journey is always rewarding.
It may seem intimidating at first, but going outside of your comfort zone is how you grow, and you become a better person overall. Try something new and challenge yourself. If I would have never challenged myself, I wouldn’t be helping so many women now in my practice. GIVE IT A TRY!
